Fatima Shama on CBS New York's WFAN
Fatima Shama, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund, spoke to CBS New York WFAN's Bob Salter about The Fund's history, camps, year-round programs, and Friendly Towns program.
"The academic school-year provides structure. Summertime for many children is without structure. And sometimes is without any opportunity to see other things. In the summer, we have learned that for children, in particular in low-income communities, their disconnect from any academic experience results in their learning losses. So when they go back to school in September, teachers are spending a month or two reteaching what happened in May or June to get kids on-par to move forward... The summer is really a chance for kids - ALL kids - to have exploration, to feed those curiosities, to see new things, to learn new words, and so for us at The Fresh Air Fund, we really see that as integral to what we do."
