The Fresh Air Fund

Jonathan and the Fishbein Family

A summer with the Fishbeins means trips to the beach, barbecues, deep sea fishing and dinners of freshly-caught lobster. For the past five years, twelve-year-old Jonathan Cruz has been able to enjoy such a summer, leaving the Bronx behind for his second home in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

Since first staying with the Fishbeins in 2003, Jonathan has become like another member of the family. Not only do host parents JoAnn and Michael look forward to seeing their Fresh Air visitor, but their children, Josh and Emily anticipate Jonathan's stay as well. All of the Fishbeins, as well as Jonathan, took some time to reflect on their summers and what the Fresh Air Fund means to them.

Josh Fishbein, 16

What do you enjoy about Jonathan’s visits?

I enjoy Jonathan’s company and companionship during the summer.

What is your favorite activity when he comes?

Swimming at the beach near our house.

What about Jonathan was most surprising?

In the Bronx, he’s unable to play sports outside because his neighborhood is too unsafe.

Michael Fishbein

What do you look forward to when you host next year?

He’ll be a year older and anxious to try and learn new things.

What makes you enjoy hosting?

Jonathan is such a nice kid and fun to have around.

How has your family benefited from the Friendly Town program?

We have all made a new friend and we have learned about the Bronx and Jonathan has learned about Falmouth.

JoAnn Fishbein

Why did you decide to host?

As a child my aunt hosted a Fresh Air child every summer, I remember how enriching that was for her family. I wanted my own children to see and learn how other kids grow up who might not have access to a suburban environment.

How do your children and Jonathan get along?

They act like siblings – they fight over who can sit in the front seat, who gets to sleep with the dog, who gets the last popsicle.

Emily Fishbein, 22

What do you like about Jonathan’s visits?

His enthusiasm and energy are contagious. He exposes me to a different culture and makes me realize that though he comes from a very different background, we’re a lot alike.

What surprised you about your Fresh Air brother?

His permanent positive attitude.

What do you think of the Friendly Town program?

It is an eye-opening experience and a way to form lasting friendships.

Jonathan Cruz, 12

What is the biggest difference between Falmouth and home?

The neighborhood is more quiet and friendly.

What was your favorite thing about being outdoors?

I’m free and having fun.

What do you like to do with your host family?

Bike ride, swim, joke around, and go to the beach.

Why do you come back to the Fishbeins during the summer?

IT’S FUN!!!!
