Lexus Harris

“At Camp Mariah you have so much fun! Everyday we had new things to do and we never got bored.” These were the first words from 12-year-old Lexus Harris, when asked about her time with The Fresh Air Fund’s Camp Mariah. Lexus was nominated for Camp Mariah’s Career Awareness Program by her teacher, and this past summer headed off for her first expedition to camp.

For three and a half weeks, Lexus filled her days with classes and activities ranging from swimming to music to journalism. “Photography class was my favorite,” explains Lexus. “I learned how to work a camera and develop pictures.” She not only strengthened her academic and creative skills but also made lasting friendships with other campers.

Lexus’s mother Sakeena Brooks was thrilled for her daughter to have this opportunity. She explains, “The Career Awareness Program provides a lot of positive reinforcement for the children. They receive help with job fairs, job shadowing, and opportunities for high school. It’s a wonderful experience for Lexus.”
