Throughout the year, The Fresh Air Fund offers a variety of employment opportunities at its midtown Manhattan office. These positions are crucial to the success of The Fund’s summer programming.
Interns assist full-time Camping, Friendly Town, Public Relations and Community Outreach staff in coordinating and facilitating thousands of Fresh Air experiences. These positions involve a broad range of responsibilities from administration and file management to fieldwork. Some positions involve working with and/or supervising children.

The Fund offers a public relations internship program for college students. Spring, summer and fall paid interns learn the basics of public relations as they assist The Fund’s Public Relations Department in increasing awareness of Fresh Air programs. All available spots for the summer 2010 public relations internship have been filled. Please consider contacting us for a position in the fall.

Friendly Towners:
Friendly Towners are responsible for communicating information to volunteer leaders living in over 300 communities where Fresh Air children visit for summer vacations. Friendly Towners keep records of host/child “matches” and communicate these “matches” to volunteer leaders on a daily basis. Friendly Towners oversee children’s bus departures to host families and keep records of visits. Friendly Towner applicants must have completed at least one year of college and possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Applicants must be detail oriented, flexible and work both independently and as a team member in busy office and bus station settings. Start date: Mid-June 2010.
Station Managers:
Station Managers supervise the bus and train departures and arrivals of nearly 10,000 children to and from their vacations at host families homes and The Fresh Air Fund camps. Each Station Manager supervises approximately 15 staff members at the Port Authority Bus Terminal or the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal. A Station Manager supervises all station activity including acting as a liaison to bus terminal managers, police, and bus company drivers. The Station Manager oversees the registration process, crowd flow, parent/child concerns and bus traffic. Station Managers must have at least three years of professional experience organizing and managing groups of children and adults. Applicants must have strong supervisory, communication and problem-solving skills. Applicants must possess strong interpersonal and organizational skills, flexibility and leadership ability. Start date: Early Summer 2010.
Medical Coordinators:
The Medical Coordinator is responsible for reviewing all medical issues before children board the bus. The Medical Coordinator will pack and label a child’s medication for the bus trip, and ensure that there is an ample supply of medication for the trip. The Medical Coordinator works directly with the office regarding missing medical forms and other related issues. Applicants must have completed at least one year of college and possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Applicants must be detail oriented and work both independently and as a team member in busy bus station settings. The Medical Coordinator reports to the Station Manager and works closely with the Help Desk Coordinator and the Station Facilitator. Start date: Early Summer 2010.
Help Desk Coordinators:
The Help Desk Coordinator is responsible for helping parents solve issues that arise concerning their children during Friendly Town trip departures. The Help Desk Coordinator reports to the Station Manager and works closely with the Medical Coordinator, Station Facilitator and Fresh Air Fund office team to expedite and facilitate the check-in process. Candidates must have completed at least one year of college and must possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Applicants must be detailed oriented and work both independently and as a team member in busy bus station settings. Start date: Early Summer 2010.
Transportation Assistant:
Transportation Assistants make all hotel and some travel reservations for volunteers who escort nearly 6,000 children on summer vacations. Transportation Assistants support Transportation Managers with all responsibilities directly and indirectly related to the transport of children on their summer vacations (communicating with volunteer leaders, purchasing train tickets, etc.). Transportation Assistants must have completed at least one year of college, possess strong word processing and telephone skills. Applicants must possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Applicants must be flexible and work independently in a busy office setting. Start date: Mid-June 2010.
File Clerk:
File clerks alphabetize and maintain files containing application forms pertaining to over 5,000 host families who participate in the Friendly Town program. File Clerks are also responsible for equipping chaperones with the supplies necessary for escorting children on long distance trips to over 300 Friendly Town areas. When needed, File Clerks are called upon to assist other Friendly Town personnel with various responsibilities such as escorting children, transporting supplies to and from the bus stations, and providing assistance to the station staff in emergencies. File clerks must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as flexibility, dedication, and team spirit. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and completed one year of college. Start Date: June 2010.
Specials Clerk:
Specials Clerks are responsible for coordinating trips for Fresh Air children, who do not take regularly scheduled buses. Work with both New York City families and host families to ensure smooth departures and returns. Specials Clerks are responsible for maintaining records and checking paperwork for accuracy. Applicants must be detail-oriented, persistent and comfortable addressing issues with hosts and families. The position also requires strong customer service, flexibility and ability to work in a busy office environment. Start date: Mid-June 2010.
Summer Administrative Assistant:
The Summer Administrative Assistant to the Director of Friendly Town performs many of the responsibilities of the full-time administrative assistant such as answering phone calls, opening and distributing mail, filing, processing forms pertaining to summer operations, data entry, etc. He or she works primarily in The Fresh Air Fund office and assists and supports the Friendly Town Director with day-to-day tasks and special assignments that ensure the smooth functioning of the Friendly Town Department. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must possess strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. He or she must be flexible and work both independently and as a team member in busy office. Must be detail oriented. Start date: Mid-Spring 2010.
